We refer to writing or drawings that have been scratched or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in public place as Graffiti, and it is often associated with vandalism. However, graffiti ranges from simple writing or 'tagging', up to extreme and elaborate wall paintings which are more like works of art than they are vandalism.
In earlier times graffiti was used as a way of expression against their kings. In the modern world, for street artists, who use walls as their canvas, graffiti is a common technique of personal expression, whether its clever and humorous or an eyesore on personal property.
In Chicago I came across this long wall full with graffitis. It shows that urban graffiti has moved on from simple tagging to works of art, and sometimes they become a part of city architecture.
