Cape Meares, just south of Tillamook Bay, was constructed in 1888. It is the shortest lighthouse on the on the scenic Oregon Coast. The stubby, octagonal tower is only 38 feet tall, but don't let the diminutive structure fool you. It sits on the edge of a towering cliff more than 200 feet above the ocean and its light could be observed 21 miles out to sea back in the days when it served as a functional navigation aid. Its light didn't need to be much higher than the surrounding landscape since the cliff itself provided all the elevation it needed.
Cape Meares was originally named Cape Lookout, but nautical charts produced in 1850 and 1853 mistakenly put the name on another cape 10 miles south. By the time the mistake was realized, the name was widely used by mariners for the southern cape, and in 1857 the Coast Survey decided it would be easier to rename the original Cape Lookout than fix the maps.
