Point Pinos Lighthouse is located on the Pacific coast of central California near Pacific Grove on the Monterey Peninsula. Built in 1855, it is the oldest continuously-operating lighthouse on the west coast of the United States. The building, lenses and prisms in this Pacific Grove lighthouse are all original, and it is still an active aid to navigation.
Initially, whale oil was used to fuel the light at Point Pinos Light. In 1880, the lighthouse shifted to kerosene for fuel. In 1919, it was finally electrified, and in 1926 a fog signal was installed. In 1975, the light was automated, and licensed to the Pacific Grove Historical Society. The fog signal and radio beacon were deactivated in 1993.
The lighthouse remains very much as it did in 1854. The original third-order lens still shines from the station.
