One would have to search long and hard to find a blue as intense as the blue of Crater Lake in Crater Lake National Park. southern Oregon, United States. This phenomenon occurs in part because the freshwater lake is incredibly deep - almost 2,000 feet! Once a towering volcano that collapsed in an ancient eruption, Crater Lake is now the deepest lake in the U.S., fed only from rainfall, snow melt and the 44 feet of snow it receives on average every year. The caldera lake is filled with approximately 4.6 trillion gallons of water!
Crater Lake has mainly two seasons: a short but breathtaking flower-filled summer and eight months of harsh, unforgiving winter with ice-cold winds and prodigious snowfall. Total snowfall for a season can be as much as 50 feet, In spite of that, the lake itself almost never freezes over; it is so deep that the heat stored in summer rises slowly, or is stirred to the top by wind, and keeps the lake surface just above freezing.
With its sheer cliffs, deep, clear, sapphire-blue water and scenic islands, Crater Lake is a gem sparkling on the crown of the Cascades.
Whatever time of year you visit you'll find that Crater Lake National Park is a very special place; start your tour, and experience its magic for yourself.
