Christmas window candles are a traditional favorite in Christmas decorating.
Placing window candles started with the ancient Romans. During the period of winter solstice, they used to hold winter celebrations to praise the return of the sun. However, putting a candle in the window as a Christmas representation appears to be an Irish custom. Some say the candle in the window was meant as a message to the Biblical Mary and Joseph: there is room here for you and your coming child. Others say it held a similar meaning for weary travelers in general - an indication of the legendary Irish hospitality: come in and join us, there is room at our hearth for you this evening. And in the days when it was illegal to practice the Catholic faith because of Penal law, the candle in the window told traveling priests that this was a home where they were welcome and could offer the Irish Catholic Mass in safety.
