When we picture old China dragons and lions come to mind.
Chinese guardian lions, also known as Imperial guardian lions, shishi lions, 'Foo Dogs' and Fu Lions, are a symbol for luck and prosperity, power and grandeur. However, because lion images have existed for so many years, the meaning of the symbols attached to the animal have grown and changed.
It is said that the Chinese dragon had nine sons, each of whom was endowed with a unique supernatural power. The eighth son was like a lion. One Chinese legend holds that female lions have nipples on the bottoms of their paws which they use to suckle the cub.
Chinese lions, more friendly than fierce, are one of the most popular and permanent examples of Chinese art. They come in pairs to provide a perfect balance of yin and yang - the ideal company for each other, and were introduced into the imagery of Chinese Buddhism as a symbol for the totality of Buddhist law.
