The unique 30-story Tower Life Building in San Antonio, Texas was completed in 1929 and originally called the Smith Young Tower. It is known for its historical background and its beautiful late Gothic Revival architecture, and was given the name that it has now in 1962, when it became the home of the Tower Life Insurance Company.
Built as the great depression was beginning, it is said the architect included Medieval gargoyles to protect the building from evil spirits and bad luck. It was one of the tallest buildings west of the Mississippi and the tallest building in San Antonio for almost 60 years until the completion of the Weston Centre in 1989. The Tower Life Building is believed to be the only octagonal office building in the United States. In 1991 it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Its green roof and unique lighting make the Tower Life Building one of the most easily recognized landmarks in the city.
