Garden of the Gods is a jagged, sometimes spooky rocky outcropping in the middle of the desert foothills below the Rocky Mountains in Colorado Springs, CO.
It's a valley of jutting rocks, weathered pinnacles and stark shapes carved by the earth and its forces. The sheer faces and abrupt jagged edges of the rocks look as if they would be the backbone of some ancient buried creature. Lighting alters perceptions. The rocky outline of a weeping Indian in the morning becomes the head of a lion in the afternoon.
Strolling on the trails makes for a relaxing morning or afternoon. The path winds among such formations as the 'Three Graces', thin pillars that represent grace, gentleness and beauty, and the 'Cathedral Spires', whose tall, slender shape suggests a church steeple. An hour or two on the trail rewards the visitor with remarkable vistas of rock and forest, and a sense of the enormous forces that built the American continent.
