The history of New Orleans in Louisiana is one of uninterrupted growth. In the 1850 census, New Orleans ranked as the 6th largest city in the United States, with a population reported as 168,675. It was the only city in the South with over 100,000 people. The city was the commercial heart of the Deep South. Over half of all the cotton grown in the entire United States passed through the port of New Orleans.

The history of New Orleans reads like a fantastic novel. The Big Easy is famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The city is often referred to as the "most unique" in America. Over the years New Orleans has had a powerful influence on American and global culture. Literary giants from Tennessee Williams to William Faulkner have flocked to the city for inspiration.
