Jing'an Si, or Jing'an Temple, a Buddhist temple characterized by lavish wealth in Shanghai, China, feels like an island of peace in a chaotic city, a world away from the urban bustle outside.
Its centerpiece is the Jing'an Silver Buddha, which is 29 feet tall and is made from 15 tons of solid silver.
To many, Buddha has become a universal symbol for prayer, reflection, and deep mysticism. Kneeling on the pads looking up, one is easily entranced by the silver eyes of this giant Buddha looking down upon you. It is not difficult to imagine why people, both rich and poor, come in from the streets just to spend some quiet time in prayer and to bring their offers.
