Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado is a spectacular visual playground dominated by ancient sedimentary rock layers that have been tipped up vertically, creating a magical scene of stone “hogbacks” towering over the surrounding semi-desert and pinyon pine forest ecosystems.
Herds of Mule Deer roam the park, and in the morning the place is abuzz with the musical sounds of birds. From the hilarious antics of the resident magpies and chipmunks to the soaring hawks and ravens, there’s always wildlife to be seen. And if you’re lucky, you’ll be there when the Bighorn Sheep are around!
It is so different to see wildlife being “wild” rather than in a zoo. Sharing their space, being in their company … if you take the time to go on the dirt trails you’ll find that even in this “city” park, you can find a deep connection to nature. The massive, towering stones of the park will fill you with humility and awe. The gentle delicateness of the ecosystem will fill you with reverence for the tenacity of life.
