Point Sur Light Station or Point Sur Lighthouse just south of Monterey is a lighthouse located 361 feet above the surf on Point Sur, a large volcanic rock, 135 miles (217 km) south of San Francisco,in California, USA. The lighthouse was completed in 1889, and the light is still an active aid to navigation.
Point Sur has always been a navigational nightmare, but beginning around 1849, the time of the California Gold Rush, Point Sur began to have significant amounts of offshore traffic which caused an increased number of shipwrecks in that area. One shipwreck in particular, that of the Ventura, influenced funding for the construction of Point Sur Light. The captain of the Ventura was drunk, hitting a group of rocks just north of Point Sur, and many people died.
Today Point Sur is the only complete turn-of-the-century lightstation open to the public in California. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and part of Point Sur Lightstation State Historic Park.
