When we think of the theater, one image before all others comes to mind: two iconic masks side by side, one happy and the other sad. These masks represent the facade of acting, the range of human emotion, the masks we all where, and/or a host of other interpretations. The smiling mask signifies comedy and the frowning mask signifies drama.
It shows how we humans can portray many emotions at once. We can laugh, cry, smile, smirk, frown, scream at the same given moment. We humans are all actors/actresses whether we try to be or try not be. We all evoke a certain emotion, which creates a more meaningful and characterized world. The world is our theater and we humans are the performers.
Even today masks still hold enchantment and fascination. In some parts of the world, the mask still retains a deep and complex meaning in tribal cultures. We, too, may experience the thrill of masquerading on Halloween, New Orleans' Mardi Gras, or by simply playing "dress,up" and stepping into another role or identity.
