The fine arts have enjoyed a long tradition in Dresden. Even back in the Middle Ages important artists of the time were active in Dresden with commissions from the Saxon court.
Founded in 1764, the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden is one of the oldest art academies in German-speaking regions. Sitting on the banks of the river Elbe the Neo-Renaissance building of the Academy was constructed between 1891-94; it is adorned with a glass dome. At the top of the dome stands a golden angel (Pheme or Fama) who is blowing the trumpet of fame.
Dresden's Academy of Fine Arts (the former Royal Academy of Arts) houses one of Germany's best art schools, the Dresden College of Fine Arts (Hochschule fuer für Bildende Künste Dresden), which offers students a wide variety of courses in fine arts. Well-known artists from the global world of art are teaching at the Academy.
