Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located on the Navajo Indian Reservation in the NE corner of Arizona near the town of Chinle. Monument Valley, Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, Sedona, Lake Powell and the majestic Grand Canyon are just a day's drive.
Steep canyon walls dotted with greenery are stretching as far as the eye can see, spires and beautiful formations that are a rock climber's dream. And there are over 2700 archaeological sites within the many canyons of Canyon de Chelly. Only 13 of the 700 standing ruins have been stabilized, re-inforced, or protected from degradation. Of all the important centers of prehistoric Anasazi culture, only this magnificent canyon shows an unbroken record of settlement for more than 1,000 years.
It is truly an amazing place of history, beauty, and mystery. Lieutenant James H. Simpson, on a military reconnaissance in 1849, hit on the ultimate word- to describe Canyon de Chelly - "stupendous."
