Ponce de Leon's Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park is the original historic site of the United States' oldest city, St. Augustine in Florida, first explored by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 and settled by Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565. America started right here, 55 years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, and 42 years before Jamestown!
When Pedro Menedez de Aviles landed here on September 8, 1565, he brought 20 artillery pieces, six-pounder guns, with him to protect the fledgling settlement. Nothing sounds like cannon fire. Nothing FEELS like cannon fire. The sound and feel of a 1500s six pounder falconet - the roar and smell of the powder - transports you back to a time when a small band of Spanish soldier-farmers faced an uncertain future in a new land that was naturally rich, but filled with hostile and potentially lethal threats.
With a long, rich history spanning nearly 500 years, the Fountain of Youth Park in Saint Augustine is delightful and amazing.
