The Mission San Diego de Alcalá is the first of California's 21 historic missions, and one of the best. Founded in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra, this first Franciscan mission in Alta California is older than the USA.
What struck me was the serenity within the compound despite the fact that the mission abuts current-day San Diego. The long, narrow and beautifully painted Basilica Mission San Diego de Alcala church is rustic and inspiring, soothing for the eyes and the soul.
A visit to this mission is a must to anyone interested in the history of the colonization of Alta California.
