The Dresden 18th-century Zwinger Palace, one of Europe's foremost cultural centers, was mostly destroyed by the carpet bombing raids of 13-15 February 1945 during World War II. Now carefully restored it is one of Dresden's major landmarks.
Built 1710-28 and originally designed as an orangery and a setting for court festivities, it was later used for exhibitions. It houses several noted museums, the most famous of which is the Semper Gallery. The highlight of its collection of more than 2000 paintings is the Sistine Madonna by Raphael.
