Whether you live in San Antonio, TX or are just visiting, the Cathedral of San Fernando is one place (besides the Alamo) you should put on your "must see" list. From the beginning this Roman Catholic Church, also known as the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria y Guadalupe, has been the geographical center of San Antonio, Texas.
The building is constructed of white stone with a beautiful rose window over the main front door. In 1868, the cathedral was considerably enlarged in the Gothic style, the addition forming the existing nave. The carved stone Stations of the Cross were added in 1874. The striking stained glass windows were added in 1920.
San Fernando de Béxar Cathedral not only remains at a prominent location in downtown Antonio but also serves as one of the city's most important structures, since it is the oldest continuously functioning religious community in the state of Texas.
