In 1786, the Spanish crown ordered the construction of a parish church for St. Augustine, Florida. The cornerstone was laid in 1793 and the church was completed and dedicated in August 1797. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the oldest parish of a permanent European settlement on the North American continent north of Mexico.
Twelve stained glass windows set forth the story of the wonderful life of the cathedral's patron saint, Augustine, after his conversion. The stained glass window in this photograph depicts 'St. Augustine preaching.'
The Florida sunshine attracts many visitors to this St. Augustine, but it's the stained glass of its beautiful buildings that adds a colorful dimension that all visitors to St. Augustine can enjoy.
