San Fernando De Béxar Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States.
The focus of the cathedral is the large retablos around the tabernacle. It was crafted in Seville, and includes three gold-leaf retablos (altar pieces - a Mexican form of wooden reredos), masterpieces of carving and gilding created to replace the original retablos lost in an 1828 fire. The central retablo in the 18th century style is 24 by 16 feet, gilded in 24-carat gold, and dedicated to "Jesus Christ, Word and Sacrament;" it houses both the tabernacle and statues of the four evangelists Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
The newly-restored San Fernando Cathedral serves as a tribute to the traditional Spanish artwork. The Cathedral is visited by people from all over the world each year. Make sure to stop by for a little while on your trip to San Antonio.
