Point Loma crest, 422 feet above sea level, overlooking San Diego bay and the ocean seemed to be the right location for San Diego's Point Loma Lighthouse. In clear weather its light was visible at sea for 25 miles.
However, the light's lofty perch on the point, the highest in the nation, meant it was often shrouded in fog, rendering it useless to mariners. That's why the Light had only a short life. In 1891, after just thirty-six years of service, Point Loma's light was extinguished. A new lighthouse was built at the foot of the Point Loma cliffs at Whale Overlook, 100 yards south of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse. The new lighthouse is still in operation and not open for visitors. You can see it from the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, as well as drive by it on a road that winds down the slope of the cliff to the Point Loma Tide Pools and scenic view points.
Today Point Loma Light (old), location: Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego, California, is on the registry for historic places.
