New Orleans is well-known for the above-ground tombs in its cemeteries, and one of the best cemeteries in N'awlins for visitors to explore is St. Louis Cemetery No. 3, located on Esplanade Avenue, near Bayou St. John.
There is a lot of history in NOLAs's St. Louis Cemetery #3 - multigenerational families of Catholic (and Greek Orthodox) faith, many society tombs such as the famous Byzantine style tomb of the Hellenic Orthodox community, the Dante Lodge of Masons, the Young Men's Benevolent Association, and the United Slavonian Benevolent Association. There are many more italian names here than in the older cemeteries. But also city history written and contained in stone: of floods and famines and yellow fever outbreaks. Hurricanes, too.
Through it all, the Big Easy and Saint Louis cemetery Number 3 survived. It's a beautiful place to visit.
