The St. Louis Cathedral is one of New Orleans' most notable landmarks and one of the cultural and architectural treasures of the French Quarter. No trip to The Big Easy is complete without a visit to the Cathedral of Saint Louis King of France, the oldest Catholic cathedral in continual use in the United States (since 1794).
In the rear of the Cathedral-Basilica is one of the most delightful spots in the Vieux Carre - St. Anthony's Garden. This little island of green, with its noble oak, sycamore and magnolia trees in the shadow of the wall of the sanctuary, is a continual delight. Saint Anthonys Garden is dominated by 'The Sacred Heart of Jesus', a white marble statue of Jesus Christ with His arms upraised. At night, floodlights project an imposing shadow from the Sacred Heart of Jesus sculpture onto the Cathedral wall - a particularly eerie and awe-inspiring sight. That Jesus knows how to make an appearance!
Although it is a Catholic house of worship, the rich history and beautiful design of St Louis Cathedral appeals to visitors of all faiths and nationalities. This excellent European-style Church which looks like Cinderella's castle at Disney is an especially calm opportunity to reflect and consider life's puzzles. Nola's Jackson Square surrounding the St. Louis Cathedral just adds to this spirit.
