The Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady - Cathedral St. Trinitatis) may be the symbol of Dresden, but the Catholic Church of the Royal Court of Saxony (Hofkirche), deserves equal attention. It stands as the largest church in all of Saxony.
The foundation stone was laid in 1739 with construction completed in 1754, whereafter the church became the coronation and burial place for generations of Saxon kings. The heart of Augustus the Strong was buried here while his body was buried in Krakow, Poland.
The cathedral was badly damaged during the air raids on Dresden in 1945. Bombs fell through the roof of the nave, causing it to collapse. The interior was extensively burnt. Reconstruction of the church began soon after the end of the war, but progress was slow. Serious reconstruction only started in 1979.
Finally, in 1987, the reconstruction of the entire structure was finished. The interior contains the last organ built by master craftsman Silbermann as well as an altar and pieta made of Meißner porcelain. The baroque church is one of the most beautiful buildings in Dresden.
